Helmshore Primary School Visit

Today we welcomed some students from Helmshore Primary School who have been learning about ‘Diversity’.

They came into our school to meet our students and learn a bit more about disability awareness as well as about the work we do to support UNICEF as part of the Rights Respecting School Award.

We explained about The RRSA steering group and the work we do to support Kenya and to promote information about all children throughout the world having ‘Rights’.

The students joined in activities with our students to explore how it feels to have different disabilities or difficulties such has fine motor, visual and mobility difficulties.

We supported each other in wheelchairs, used different glasses to experience different problems with our vision and completed activities as if we had fine motor difficulties - the students discovered that it is really hard to do buttons up or feed yourself if your fingers don’t work properly by wearing thick gloves and trying to do those task. They also realised how must trust you have to put into other people who are helping you - and some of them admitted finding that quite scary.

The Newfield and Helmshore pupils all enjoyed spending time together, getting to know each other and learning from each other.

All the students enjoyed themselves and have asked if they can come back, so we hope to see them again in the Autumn term.

Hello to you all, I would like to say a massive thank you for today! Our pupils and ourselves got so much out of it and were absolutely full of it when they got back to school. They really enjoyed telling other pupils and many members of staff about their day. We were in absolute awe at your skills, organisation, school and pupils…you are all incredible! We would absolutely love to continue the link. Thank you very much again!
