This week we had the second parent workshop on supporting communication at home at the turn out blew us away! It was wonderful to see so many families in school.
We explored what is meant by communication and how complex it is, sharing that there are many reasons why a child or young person may have challenges with their communication.
We also discussed why communication is so important and our approach to supporting communication across school, for example through close working relationships with speech and language therapists.
We explored early communication and how to use intensive interaction and supports such as objects of reference to build early relationships and support early understanding of routines and transitions.
We then looked at the importance of visuals and different types of AAC, showing some examples of high and low tech options and the power of visuals in supporting our learners both in expressing their wants and needs, and also to support their understanding.
We shared some home-themed Makaton signs before playing a game of Makaton bingo and finally touched on supporting children who are multilingual.
It was a wonderful afternoon, we aim to run future sessions.
