Newfield staff have been busy enhancing their knowledge and skills this week to give our children and families the best possible support.
Alison and Sharon attended a two day Youth Mental Health First Aider course this week which they both found very enjoyable and informative. The course provided in depth training to provide first aid to young people who may be experiencing a range of mental health issues. They both felt this training further developed existing skills and knowledge which will enable them to confidently support both their own, and others wellbeing. The course was run by two trainers from different backgrounds, one was from a clinical setting and the other was from an educational setting, which provided valuable insight into both their perspectives. Alison and Sharon also felt the course highlighted just how fragile mental health is for us all and how quickly, and sometimes dramatically, things can change. The strategies they have learnt will form part of our toolkit for helping us to support our pupils and colleagues at Newfield.
Our swimming teacher Nicola has been running sessions to induct people to the use of our hydro pool. It’s been over 18 months since we’ve been able to use it due to COVID restrictions and our airflow systems, but finally, we are almost ready to re-open! Our pupils with the most complex physical needs, as well as our youngest children with autism, all really benefit from using our wonderful provision. All staff who will be supporting children in hydro have been familiarising themselves with the specialist equipment and safety measures in the pool and changing areas.
We cannot wait to put the staff’s new skills to work!
