On election night lots of people will have thought carefully about which way to vote, they will have made their choice and communicated it through putting a ‘x’ in a box.
For decisions like this making a choice is not always easy …
Many people with autism find choice making difficult and this could be because their communication is limited. It could also be because they cannot predict the longer term consequences of their choice or it could simply be that they do not understand what range of options they have available to them.
In order to help our learners at Newfield make positive choices we use visual communication extensively in classes to children understand what the choice they have is. We also use lots of motivating resources and activities to try and ensure children actively WANT what is on offer.
Choice making is a very important skill to master and is included in all of our lessons and daily activities. Visual communication is vital if a leaner does not have verbal language. We always remember that just because someone cannot speak it doesn’t mean they have nothing to say!
