Many of our pupils at Newfield have weekly Speech and Language Therapy sessions. These consist of differentiated activities to meet the needs of the pupils and help to develop their communication and social skills.
Speech and language therapists plan engaging activities for pupils including ‘Lego Therapy’ where appropriate. The therapists lead sessions where the pupils are asked to build, possibly a tower or something more complex, within this they have the opportunity to work on social communication skills, interaction and receptive communication as they follow instructions.
The article below tells the story of the ‘Block Bus’, a mobile unit which travels around rural areas helping young people with autism and other disabilities. The bus plays calm music and is a pleasing environment for the pupils to be in. The article goes in to detail about the work that is undertaken on the bus and how it is beneficial to those who have used it.
