After school today, members of the RRSA stayed behind to take part in a ‘Sleepout’ to reflect on and experience elements of homelessness. The group went out into the cold, windy rain and talked about what it would feel like to not be able to come in from the horrible weather.
When they came in, the group went into the small hall, where they watched a film about children who do not have homes, or beds to sleep in - members of the group said that it is a child’s right to have a bed - and one of the group told us that when she first came to England, there weren’t enough beds so she didn’t have one and had to sleep on the floor - the other members of the group were shocked by this, but it made us all think about how lucky we all are to have warm beds and homes.
After this, we went into the big hall, where we had sleeping bags, cushions, blankets and pillows, and everyone snuggled down in the warm to enjoy hot chocolate, toast and watch a film.
When the film finished, we put on the disco lights and some music and had a big dance, before packing up and going to our homes and families.
It was lovely for the pupils and staff to spend some nice relaxing quality time together - thanks to everyone involved. We enjoyed our rights to good food, relax with our friends and be safe.
We raised a small amount of money with this event which we put towards the fundraising for Blackburn Nightsafe from the staff sleepout last weekend.
