Our Sikhism day is based around the festival of Vaisakhi, which is a celebration of the founding of the Khalsa – the Sikh community and of everyone being treated equally. It is celebrated with visits to the Gurdwara, processions, music, dancing and sharing food. We have already had an assembly this morning with Baldeep Haur Kungin.
Today pupils will be visiting our own Gurwara where they will be asked to take their shoes off and cover their heads when entering as this is what needs to happen before the holy book can be read. Pupils will experience reading from the Guru Granth Sahib, harmonium and drum music and be able to explore other artefacts. We are also learning about story of Vaisakhi and how it is celebrated with flags, dressing up, flowers and Bhangra music and langar – making and sharing food and tidying up afterwards! In classes we are making nankhatai, which is a kind of biscuit Sikhs often enjoy at this time of year; as well as making craft/art work for the exhibition on Friday – Sikh flags, tissue paper flower garlands… We’ve got a busy day ahead of us!
