As we approach the close of the Autumn Term and head into the Christmas break we have a sense of finishing: presents are given out, Father Christmas comes to visit and we throw a party!
All of these events are like rituals that signal the end of term.
The idea that an activity, event or item has finished can be very difficult for an autistic person.
Here at Newfield we spend time directly teaching ‘finished’ through visual schedules with finished pockets, lessons with clear ends, music that signifies finished and visual communication.
We also use strategies like sand timers to help children understand that an activity is coming to an end.
And as it’s the end of the year we’d like to wish you all a… Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
