Sharing can be difficult for any young child. Taking turns with toys or having to share favourite snacks is a skill that may take some time to develop!
Because children with autism sometimes find social situations a bit stressful, it can be hard to understand why someone else needs to take a turn!
At Newfield School for Autism we use lots of visual strategies to support sharing and turn taking:
- Timers
- Turn taking boards
- ‘Make a Deal’ boards
- Schedules
It may take a while… but when a game is played well or the swing is shared it is wonderful progress to see!
