One of the features commonly associated with autism is that individuals may have a particular or intense area of interest.
Sometimes this may be numbers, computers or trains occasionally children may have more unusual interests like electricity pylons, the location of post boxes around Lancashire or toilet brushes (!)
Films like Rainman reinforced the idea in the media that ‘Savant’ skills or ‘Islets of Ability’ are part of autism but research shows that these super-special abilities are only found in around 10% of the autistic population but of course everyone has strengths!
At Newfield School we have great builders, artists, musicians and scientists who love to develop their skills and explore the world around them.
