School For Autism @ Newfield is Officially Open

Today was a very special day here at Newfield School. We celebrated the opening of our new school with a number of events through the afternoon including celebrity visits, inspirational, motivational speakers and much more…

The ceremony opened with words from our Head Teacher Geoff Fitzpatrick, followed by a lovely speech from Harry Catherall who is a Chief Executive at Blackburn with Darwen council. Mr Catherall spoke of the hard work and dedication that had gone into the planning and building of the school and how much time and effort Geoff and many others had put in to making sure the school was an Autism friendly environment for our pupils to engage and learn within.

We then heard from Shaun Gash, who has participated in many physical challenges over the years for charity. Shaun is a wheelchair user, he is an amazing inspiration to many as he proves that anything is possible with hard work, dedication and a fabulous support network. His story is certainly poignant within our school environment.

Our school choir then took the stage, they sang and signed beautifully to ‘This Is Me’ a song taken from The Greatest Showman. The 14-19 department are currently performing a version of the film, with their final performance to take place tomorrow. It was a very emotional performance by all accounts and was enjoyed by all.

We were later joined by members of Blackburn Rovers football club including Jayson Leutwiler, the team’s goalkeeper and the team mascot! The children were visited in their classrooms and thoroughly enjoyed meeting Jayson and Rover.

The guests were treated to refreshments, including a special cake and biscuits made by our very own kitchen staff. It was a fantastic occasion and we all look forward to many happy years in our new school.
